Martyrs need to win

MERTHYR Tydfil know they could be dragged into a real relegation dogfight if they don’t start winning matches regularly.

They are just four points clear of the relegation pack and face another vital BGB League Premier Division clash at Swindon Supermarine tomorrow.

Last weekend saw them win a nine-goal thriller with second-from-bottom Corby Town, thanks to an injury-time winner that kept the Martyrs above the danger area.

It did not help manager Garry Shephard’s heart rate much, but the result far outweighed the performance.

“The first-half was pretty much even with us taking a one-goal lead into the half-time interval,” said a rueful Shephard. “What happened in the second half I don’t know, as goals were coming from everywhere.

“Even when they equalised in the 89th minute we all thought that was that, until we scored the winner in injury-time.

“It was an amazing match and you had to be there to see it. We are not out of the woods yet and the boys realise that we need a few more points to make sure it doesn’t go to the last game.”
