Faltering Martyrs slip closer to the danger zone

Gloucester 3-1 Merthyr Martyrs

MERTHYR’S trip to Gloucester City ended in a 3-1 defeat last night, leaving Garry Shephard’s side hovering just above the drop zone.

Mike Jones put the Martyrs ahead early on before the hosts rallied to go in 2-1 up at the break, and they added a third in the second half to seal the win.

Merthyr host Corby Town on Saturday with manager Gary Shephard confident the club can pull away from trouble at the foot of the BGB League Premier Division.

“I think our home form will see us through,” said Shephard.

“If we can get two more wins from the remaining games I think we’ll be OK.

“Our home performances have been very good – apart from Cheshunt – and we know we have to perform at home.

“But at the end of the day I don't worry about relegation because it rubs off on the players and we need them to have self-confidence.”

Merthyr never stopped battling last night but by the end they were well beaten.
