THERE was no doubt about County’s superiority in this FA Cup clash between Blue Square South rivals.
But while it was never going to be easy at Basingstoke, County built their victory on a strong back line in which Lee Jarman and Mark Dodds were again outstanding and they were able to survive the first half loss of injured right back and skipper Steve Jenkins, with substitute Ian Hillier steeping in smoothly.
Damon Searle took the captain’s armband and led by example while the midfield duo of Nathan Davies and Lee Collier did not stop working throughout.
County gained their richly deserved reward in the 77th minute when a Searle free-kick rebounded to Jason Bowen on the right and his pinpoint cross was headed in at the far post by ace marksman Charlie Griffin.
County are now just two games away from the first round proper and their manager Peter Beadle was pleased.
“The result shows how hard the team are working and I am delighted for them,” Beadle said.
