Welsh Prem facing a major shake-up

A MAJOR re-structuring of the Welsh Premier league is on the cards – and member clubs will debate far-reaching plans next month.

All 18 clubs in membership of the league have been briefed on the proposals and for the major change to come about it will really be like the proverbial turkey voting for Christmas.

If the alterations are made, it will mean a new league of just 10 clubs, with another 10-strong division below that.

The Welsh League in the South and Cymru Alliance in the North will then form the platforms beneath.

The aim is to improve playing standards, attract bigger attendances and improve the general perception of the league.

New Uefa licensing laws will be introduced for the 2009-10 season, with various criteria including ground facilities and playing standards. It is understood that only six clubs in the present top flight would meet the criteria.

The season would entail each club playing one another four times, like in the Scottish Premier league. There would be play-offs for promotion and relegation.

Port Talbot chairman Andrew Edwards, who represents South Wales clubs on the league board, says teams in his area are generally in favour of the proposals.

“All the clubs want this league to move forward and go to another level,” said Edwards.
