USUALLY when Steve Evans steps onto the Racecourse Ground turf, it is to do battle in yet another relegation six-pointer.
But for tonight at least, the Wrexham defender can put his club worries to the back of his mind as he looks to win his seventh Welsh cap.
Taking a break from the Dragons’ uphill struggle to avoid dropping out of the Football League is a welcome distraction for the 28-year-old.
He said: “It’s always nice to get away for a few days and think about something else, and to still be getting the call to play for Wales is a great boost for me.
“It adds to my confidence, and I find myself the oldest guy in the squad now after Carl Robinson.
“For me, it’s just great to be here.”
The obvious question about the gulf in class between League Two and international football is one the laid-back Evans is used to fielding.
“It will be difficult, but I have got used to playing against the best around since I got my first call-up two years ago,” he said.
“I have learned to take it all in my stride, and just look forward to every big game.
“Maybe at first I wondered whether I could handle this level, but the gaffer wouldn’t pick me if he felt I couldn’t cope.
“All I can do is my best.
“Now I am just looking forward to not only playing for Wales, but also playing at my home ground.”
