'We can still make the play-offs' - Jones

DAVE Jones and his Cardiff City players still believe they can grab the sixth and final Coca-Cola Championship play-off spot.

The Bluebirds are seven points behind sixth-placed Plymouth Argyle with two games in hand after their 2-1 win against Bristol City – and their next two matches are at home, against Southampton next Saturday followed by West Brom.

“We are in with a shout and we must keep believing and keep going,” said Jones. “In our last two home matches we have beaten Bristol City, who are second, and third-placed Hull.

“Everybody is focused on our next two League matches and we have not even thought about the FA Cup.

“We have a slim chance of making the top six and while that is there we will keep trying for maximum points in every game.”

There are still four days to go before the emergency loan transfer period ends and Jones admits it looks ‘unlikely’ City will be able to add to their squad.

Michael Chopra’s goal for Sunderland against Aston Villa has ended hopes of manager Roy Keane letting the striker return to South Wales on loan, while Rob Earnshaw was in Derby County’s 16 and will not be coming back to Ninian Park.

The Bluebirds had made strong enquiries about both with Keane confirming the Chopra interest.

“It was not speculation about Chopra going back to Cardiff,” said Keane.

“I admire Dave for chancing his arm but Michael is going nowhere.”

Jones insisted he will keep on trying to attract players although the previous financial uncertainty had affected their recruitment quest.

“The High Court decision in the club’s favour came two months too late to go and get players,” he added.

“We’ve missed the boat. Not many teams have players left they want to go out on loan.

“But we’ll keep working and we are making phone calls every day.”

“But we are still fighting on two fronts and what the lads have done for me, Cardiff City and themselves I have nothing but praise for.”
