Boys celebrate fifty golden years of the Deri Broncos

FIFTY golden years of tries, scrums and conversions were celebrated at the Deri Broncos recently as they took a look back over half-a-century of sporting history.

Deri RFC have been battling it out on the rugby pitch for 50 years this month, but they originally started out in 1957 on a field on Cefn Bach Farm in Deri.

The team became members of the old Monmouthshire District Rugby Union, and a year later they had a new field and changing rooms, which they still use to this day.

The most famous Bronco off all time was John Uzzell, who went on to play for Newport and Wales.

While playing for Newport, Uzzell dropped a goal against the All Blacks, leading to Newport winning 3-0 and causing the All Blacks their only defeat on their 1963 tour of the British isles.

The proudest moment for the Broncos, however, came more recently in 2004 when the club attained full membership of the Welsh Rugby Union.

But the fun doesn’t stop off the pitch with this lot, as the boys at the club met up with past players and club members at the weekend for a reunion and anniversary party – let’s hope they’re all recovering!
