New edition of growers’ guide

THE Home Grown Cereals Authority has updated its Wheat Growth Guide to reflect changes in variety performance and increased knowledge over the past decade.

The new edition includes the latest research findings on all aspects of wheat growth and, in particular, a new section on rooting has been added.

“In addition to assessments on weeds, pests and diseases, growers need to assess the crop itself,” said Professor Graham Jellis, HGCA’s director of research. “By comparing crops to benchmark values, growers can determine how best to manipulate husbandry. However, while compatible with good yields, benchmarks should not necessarily be regarded as management targets.”

Reference points have been selected throughout the growing process, from establishment to grain filling and ripening, to enable growers to track the progress of crops.

The new edition is available at www.hgca.com. A printed copy is available from HGCA, Caledonia House, 223 Pentonville Road, London, N1 9HY.
