THE 9.25lb rainbow landed by Treherbert fly fisherman Mike Davies was the best fish of the week.

Jeff Thomas, from Caerphilly, steered a rainbow of 8.25lb into the landing net then caught three more for a 17.5lb total.

Andrew Morris also included a rainbow of 8.5lb among the 11 he returned after coming from Newport to fish catch and release.

Barry angler Tony Martin caught rainbows of 6.25lb and 7lb; Ross Haines had a 5.5lb fish in his catch while rainbows weighing 4lb and 5lb helped Mike Payne head back to Cardiff with four fish weighing 15lb in his bag.

AN orange fritz fly cast by Newport angler Bryn Collier was the downfall of a 10lb rainbow while a hare’s ear nymph tempted the 6.5lb brown trout caught by Cardiff fly

Tony Roberts, from Newport, put together a four fish 14.75lb bag with the aid of a black gold head daddy longlegs fly and when Cardiff’s Andrew Davies tackled the lake with a cat’s whisker lure he caught three rainbows totalling 12.75lb.

NICK Davies, from Newport, had a good day when he came off the water with 10 rainbows weighing 25lb in his bag.

Mike Watkins, from Ebbw Vale, took a five fish 13.25lb bag and two other anglers from the town John Burchill and Neville Palmer had catches of three fish for 6.75lb and two for 5.5lb. Bill Cornwall cast a buzzer for his four fish 9.25lb bag.

DARREN Groves tied on a black buzzer and caught one rainbow for the pot before returning another 18 fish and the same fly did the trick for Roger Jones as he popped one in his bag and returned nine other fish.

Don Crocker kept one trout and returned eight; Ian and David John went away with eight fish and a bag weight of 23lb and after retaining one trout Terry Coles fished on with buzzers and returned another 13 fish.

A PHEASANT tail nymph that accounted for the week’s best brown trout, a 9.25lb beauty banked by Allan Payne.

Lee Jefford caught the best rainbow of 10.75lb and Tony Williams had one of 10.25lb in his five fish 39.25lb bag.

A 9.75lb rainbow with a taste for a small hare’s ear nymph helped Jason Harris to a four fish 29.5lb bag; Dennis Parker’s four fish 25.5lb bag came to bloodworm nymphs and George James used a tadpole fly for his four fish 27.5lb bag.

BEN Franklin, a 15-year-old from Stafford, will remember his holiday in South Wales after his father took him to the Tintern fishery and he landed a specimen brown trout of 12lb 14oz.

Bob Clarke came from Langstone to fish catch and release and returned 19 fish including a 7lb blue trout. Newport visitor John Stevens banked a 7.25lb rainbow while Cardiff anglers Steve Evans and Paul Long both landed blue trout weighing 6.5lb.

Steve had another fish of 6lb and Paul also caught a 6lb brown trout.

Hengoed anglers Martin Bates and Neil Evans shared nine fish including a 6lb blue and a 5.5lb rainbow while among those anglers who reached the 20 fish catch and release limit were Dale Thomas and John Cassidy, from Cardiff and Newport’s Brian Collins.

DEREK Elson got off to a bad start when a gust of wind as he was casting resulted in the fly impaling itself in his head, but after being unhooked he fished on for a five fish 10.5lb bag.

Wentwood Reservoir Fly Fishing Association secretary Dave Jones took a five fish 8.75lb bag while Phil George’s five rainbows weighing 13lb 1oz was the best bank caught limit although Bob Stoodley was only one ounce behind with his five fish to 3.75lb.

Cardiff visitors Ron Southwood, Robert Ford and Dave Pockett went away with a three fish 6.25lb bag, a 4.5lb brace and two weighing 4.25lb while Dave Bailey’s 4lb 1oz rainbow was the best of the week.

THE top trout was the 3.25lb rainbow caught by Cardiff angler Dave Scribbens.

THE Cancer Research Charity Day is on Sunday, May 11 when anglers have a chance to win prizes and support a very worthwhile cause.

Entry for the bank section costs £16 and is for a four-fish limit while the £25 boat entry covers a six-fish limit.
