Another open victory going Howard’s way

THERE seems to be no stopping Howard Green as he racks up win after win, the latest coming in the Sunday open at Cefn Mably Lakes.

The Pontllanfraith tackle shop owner caught 56lb 4oz of carp on pole fished paste to open a wide margin over second man Rob Jones, from Caerphilly, who caught 31lb 2oz of carp.

Cardiff Nomads member Alan Davies, from Trealaw, finished third with a level 30lb.

Wintry conditions put the carp off the feed when Spencer Works AC fished at Staunton Court.

Instead of the expected three-figure bags, Oakdale member Simon Jones won his second club match in a row with a modest 47lb.

He drew peg one on the jetty and caught just eight carp to 9.5lb on pole and sweetcorn.

Ian Driscoll, from Newport, was runner-up with 41lb 12oz and then weights plummeted to the 16lb 4oz that put Tommy Hill in third place.

The next day, members of Sirhowy AS had almost as tough a day at the Gloucestershire venue.

Again t was Simon Jones in first place, but not the previous day’s winner.

This Simon Jones is the Rhymney angler who is a regular winner with the club and he added this first place to his collection with exactly 50lb of carp on pole fished sweetcorn from the noted “Trough Peg.”

Runner-up was Brian Protheroe, from Merthyr, with 47lb 11oz and Hereford based Mark Holden was third with 43lb 11oz.

Newport’s Nicky Bowkett put a lot of distance between himself and the rest of the field in the Newport AA match at Morgans Pond when he put 48lb 8oz on the scales with a string of bream.

Club secretary Gerry Lock was the nearest challenger with 14lb 12oz and Martyn Truman filled third place with 9lb 4oz of roach.
